Belagavi: District Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi hoisted the tricolour on the occasion of Independence Day at district stadium today and also felicitated several freedom fighters.He highlighted the role played by several freedom fighters and great personalities from Karnataka who were actively involved in the freedom movement. He said Tipu Sultan of Mysore, Veer Sindhur Laxman, Venkatappa Nayai of Surpur, Balasaheb of Nargund, N S Hardikar, Alur Venkatrao, Onake Obava, Umadevi Kundapur, Siddamma of Bellary, Bhageerathamma of Tumakuru and many other great personalities of yesteryear in the state inspired many to enter the freedom struggle.He recalled the contributions and bravery of Rani Chennamma and her war against the mighty British rulers and said, she was the first woman freedom fighter the country produced. Her bravery should inspire the generations to come, he said adding that the commander of Chennamma, Sangolli Rayanna was a brave soldier who fought againt the British.The minister felicitated freedom fighters Vitalrao Yalgi, Rajendra Kalaghatgi, Gangadhar Kamat, Rajaram Katti, Sadashivrao Bhosle on teh occasion. A brave boy Manoj Dhamnekar, a physically challenged who had saved two girls from drowing in Tilari ghat river also was honoured by the minister. MPs Prabhakar Kore, Suresh Angadi, legislators Abhay Patil, Vivekrao Patil were present.
