Belagavi: Congress, once known as strongest fort of Congress is losing its power in election after election, except the previous general election, in the district as with the Monday’s results its strength reduced to 5 from 8.

Ramesh Jarkiholi the leader of 17-member rebels battalion who played the deadly game to bring down the last coalition government was the in-charge of the district to who was given target to win at least a dozen of a total one-and-a-half dozen seats in the district in the last general election.

He had started the “Mission Dozen” target and managed to win Athani and Kagwad constituencies for Congress from BJP. However, though he could not reach the target, he was satisfied with the defeat of Laxman Savadi from Athani. Though he lost Kittur and Ramdurg he got covered by winning in Belagavi Rural and Bailhongal constituencies.

With the changed political scenario, he, from Gokak, Shrimanth Patil from Kagwad and Mahesh Kumathalli from Athani resigned for their legislature membership and won back from their respective constituencies from BJP. The Congress once used to win 15-16 seats in the district has now having Yamakanamaradi where Satish Jarkiholi representing, Bailhongal Mahantesh Koujalagi, Chikkodi-Sadalaga Ganesh Hukkeri, khanapur MLA Anjali Nimbalkar and Laxmi Hebbalkar representing Belagavi Rural constituency.
